Optical networks are moving from opaque and translucent architectures towards all-optical (transparent) architectures. In translucent architectures a small amount of regeneration (e.g. optical–electronic–optical conversion) is available in the network. The incorporation of the physical impairments in the routing and wavelength assignment (RWA) problem in transparent optical networks has recently received some attention from the research communities. This work compiles a comprehensive survey of the proposed algorithms that address this issue. The physical layer impairments and related classification in optical networks are initially presented followed by physical layer impairments (PLI) constrained and aware RWA algorithms. Algorithmic approach, current PLI-RWA proposals, impact of wavelength conversion on these algorithms, protection and resilience considerations, and proposed extensions to control planes are covered in this work. Further research topics are presented in this study. 2008 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

A Novel Protection Guaranteed, Quality of Transmission Aware Routing and Wavelength Assignment Algorithm for All-optical Networks

Transparent All Optical Networks carry huge traffic and any link failure can cause the loss of gigabits of data; hence protection and its guarantee becomes necessary at the time of failure. Many protection schemes were presented in the literature, but none of them speaks about protection guarantee. Also, in all optical networks, due to absence of  regeneration capabilities, the physical layer i...

A Survey on Static Impairment-Aware Routing and Wavelength Assignment Heuristics in Optical WDM Networks

Physical layer impairments in optical fibers degrade the quality of the optical signal as it propagates along a lightpath. This leads to an increase in the Bit Error Rate (BER) of the optical signal and the corresponding lightpath becomes infeasible for communication if the BER crosses a certain threshold limit. Traditional RWA approaches assume an ideal physical layer medium and ignore the eff...

A Survey on Static Routing Wavelength Assignment Considering Physical Layer Impairments in Wavelength Divison Multiplexing Optical Networks

Imagine a world of people who are connected through networks either they are far or close to each other and they could communicate in just “planks time”(that is believed to be the possible shortest duration) by paying less and obtaining great speed to communicate, this is just what the researchers are trying to obtain these days. One of the major problems facing optical networks is Routing and ...

Considering transmission impairments in Routing Wavelength Assignment algorithms

We face the Routing and Wavelength Assignment problem considering as constraints the physical impairments that arise in all-optical networks. We propose a simple model for the physical layer considering both static and dynamic impairments. It is based on simulation of signal propagation in order to characterize each lightpath with a reliability parameter.

Signal-Quality Consideration for Dynamic Connection Provisioning in All- Optical Wavelength-Routed Networks

We investigate new connection-provisioning algorithms to efficiently provide signal-quality-guaranteed connections in an all-optical WDM mesh network. In the all-optical network, signal degradations incurred by nonideal transmission medium accumulate along a lightpath. When the signal degradation reaches a certain level, the connection is not usable and is blocked due to transmission impairment...
